Spirit Players Have Huge Impact in US Women’s Team’s Huge Win at Women’s World Cup
Washington Spirit players Rose Lavelle and Mallory Pugh combined for three goals as the United States drubbed Thailand 13-0 in their first 2019 World Cup match.
Lavelle had a strong showing in her first ever World Cup match, scoring two of the US’s thirteen goals. The midfielder’s first goal was a low drive from the top of the penalty box that was tailing to the left. While Thailand keeper Sukanya Chor Charoenying was able to get a hand on the ball, Lavelle’s shot was too powerful, pushing past the keeper and into the net.
Lavelle’s second goal was a tap-in from the center of the box following a quick pass from fellow US midfielder Sam Mewis. Lavelle was subbed out shortly after her second goal for forward Carli Lloyd.
