Birthday Party Leads to Deck Collapse in Germantown

Montgomery County Police and Fire Rescue units were called to the 19300 block of Liberty Heights Lane on Saturday night for the report of numerous people trapped after the deck of a townhouse collapsed during a birthday party.

Units were called to the townhouse where over 100 people were celebrating a 65th birthday party at 9:30 pm on June 8. Miraculously, no serious injuries were reported, although initial reports said that many people were trapped under the collapsed deck. MCFRS spokesman Pete Piringer reported the EMS evaluated about 100 people for minor injuries, but only one was transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. MCFRS deployed up to 70 first responders to deal with mass casualties and triage injured patients. The MCFRS Technical Rescue Unit also responded to the scene but ultimately was not needed as all were able to self-extricate.

The decking collapsed after it appeared to separate from the townhouse.

“It appears as though the deck came apart from the house, it looked like it was rotted, probably from some water damage, but that remains to be seen,” Piringer said, adding that a building inspector had been called to the scene. “The deck had a catastrophic failure, probably because of too much weight and too many people.”

It is the second deck collapse in Germantown in two weeks, on Saturday, May 25 similar incident occurred on Perrone Drive. That incident sent three people to a local hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries.
