Dickerson Man Dies After Being Trapped Under Tractor

A Dickerson man has died after his tractor overturned down an embankment in western Montgomery County

The man, 60-year-old Dru Jones, was a 14-year veteran of the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue.

At about 7:15 am Tuesday morning, June 3, Montgomery County Fire Rescue was contacted by Frederick County fire officials to check on the welfare of Jones after he did not show up for work. He was assigned to the Vigilant Hose Company in Emmitsburg. MCFRS were told that his last known whereabouts were in the 2300 block of W. Harris Road in Dickerson, not far from Sugarloaf Mountain.

Montgomery County Police and fire officials searched the location and noted a tractor missing. Dozens of rescuers search the property and after about 30 minutes the tractor was located overturned down a steep ravine, in an area that was used for dumping environmental debris such as tree branches and cut brush.

MCFRS technical rescue firefighters located Jones trapped under the tractor with apparent traumatic injuries. Firefighters had to set up rigging and roping to safely get to the tractor. Once MCFRS personnel were able to get down into the ravine it was determined that Jones had succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 9:14 am.

At 11:51 Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue released a statement via Twitter confirming “the unexpected death of FF III Drue Jones as a result of a tractor accident and technical rescue incident in Montgomery County.”

Police and fire crews from both Frederick County and Montgomery County remain on the scene as the investigation continues. The victim’s son, Stephen Jones, is also a career firefighter with the Frederick County and President of the Local 3666.
