Germantown Community is Raising Funds to Support Family of Slain Teen

April 19, 2019

Family and friends of the 18-year-old Germantown teen who was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday in Germantown have set up a GoFundMe.org account to help his family pay for funeral costs.

Tray Dawkins was a 2018 graduate of Northwest High School, where he was a member of the Jaguars football team and a track and field teams, he was gunned down as he stood with a group of friends on Curry Powder Lane on Tuesday night.

The GoFundMe.org site says Tray was a great son, brother, and uncle. “He was not some street kid; he was raised in the church. He had goals he set, and accomplished,” reads the fundraising site. It goes on to say that Tray was currently attending college and working part-time at the time of the shooting. As of 10:00 on Friday morning community members have raised more than $5,000 for the grieving family.

The community has also been honoring Tray on social media, Northwest High School Principal Jimmy D’Andrea posted an announcement on the school’s Twitter account, reading in part, “It is with a very heavy heart I share that one of our 2018 graduates, Tray Dawkins, passed away.” He also posted a video of Tray Dawkins competing in the Maryland State Track and Field Championships.

The Northwest Jags Football Twitter account posted a tribute saying, “The NW Jags football family lost a special person yesterday. Hard to make sense of this. You were a true warrior with a kind soul.”

Montgomery County Police continue to investigate the incident, no arrests have been made, and very little suspect information has been released regarding who may have perpetrated this crime.

On Thursday, MCPD took the unusual step of posting on the department’s official social media accounts that police were aware of social media posts about the shooting.

“We would remind the community, the MCPD is currently investigating the homicide and is the only source for updates and information regarding the investigation. Investigators are aware of information currently circulating on social media that is believed to be fictitious. Please be wary of inaccurate or false information originating from sources other than the MCPD on social media.”

Montgomery County Police have not given an official public update on the shooting incident on April 16 since releasing the identification of the Tray Dawkins on Wednesday, April 17.

Detectives urge anyone with information regarding the incident or information about the suspect or suspects involved with this incident to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070. For those who wish to remain anonymous, Crime Solvers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to the arrest of the suspect. Tipsters can call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).  Tipsters may remain anonymous.
