Montgomery College to Celebrate Germantown Community Day on Saturday

On Saturday, Montgomery College will celebrate Germantown Community Day to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Germantown Campus with the community that has supported it from the very beginning.

   On March 30, the College, community, and businesses will come together to learn a bit of history about Germantown, engage in hands-on, interactive displays and demonstrations, participate in fun and friendly games with a chance to win prizes, enjoy locally-based food and entertainment, and simply have a good time. The celebration will be from noon until 4:00 pm.

   “We are so excited by the outpouring of interest in Germantown Community Day,” said Margaret Latimer, Vice President of Montgomery College and Provost of the Germantown Campus.  “MC is the community’s college. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Germantown Campus has become a celebration of Germantown. It’s a great day and way for the community to get to know us and learn about MC and to get to sample all that makes Germantown a wonderful community.”

   All activities are free and open to the public. Germantown Community day will feature live entertainment provided by BlackRock Center for the Arts. Performers will include: Kensington Arts Theatre Second Stage, Kuchipudi Dance Academy, Story Tapestries, Flute Ninjas, and the Bel Cantanti Opera Company.

   Along with mini skills clinics run by MC's athletic teams (soccer, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading). MC student athletes and their coaches as they provide expert instruction on the fundamentals of their sport.

   Other activities include 50 tables of interactive displays, Raptor tattoos, MC mascot Monty the Raptor, bungee basketball inflatable, soccer fever inflatable, campus tours including the Center for Early Education, student art exhibit, and cybersecurity challenges and nature play with the Maryland Zoo as well as a petting zoo (baby cow, mini horse, goats, bunnies, chickens, ducks, lambs, and a pig). The day will also include a Student Art Exhibit: Beyond the Curriculum - An exhibition of artworks by MC Germantown students pursuing independent, personal, or self-directed creative efforts. Includes drawing, painting, photography, digital illustration, and digital animation.

   There will also be food vendors including Chick-Fil-A, JR Caterers, Julia's Gourmet, Derrick Stackhouse BBQ, and Firehouse Subs.

   Co-sponsors of the event include Universities at Shady Grove, Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, Formost Graphic Communications, BlackRock Center for the Arts, Data Networks, and The MC Campus Store, Follett Corporation.
