The Lady Coyotes’ girls basketball team’s 2018-19 season has been nothing short of historic.
Clarksburg not only won its first division title in school history, but head coach Sissy Natoli was unanimously nominated and voted MCPS 4A West Coach of the Year by the Montgomery County Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Their historic season will continue for at least another playoff round as well, as the Lady Coyotes (17-5) avenged last year’s playoff defeat to Richard Montgomery (13-10) with a nail-biting 46-45 home victory Thursday night.
The Lady Coyotes and Rockets were back-and-forth on the scoreboard all night long, with neither team able to pull away from the other. They finished the first quarter tied 9-9.
Clarksburg and Richard Montgomery’s offensive production peaked in the second quarter. Both managed to keep it close, but the home team led 25-24 at the half.
The Lady Coyotes seemed to finally pull ahead in the third quarter, eventually holding a 37-32 lead by the start of the final period.
The Rockets played stubborn defense, though, which gave their offense enough time to come within one point at 46-45 with 24 seconds remaining.
Clarksburg kept possession until a foul under its own basket gave Richard Montgomery the ball with 0.8 seconds left on the clock, giving their team one last shot at a two-point buzzer beater.
It wouldn’t be enough time, however, and the Lady Coyotes held on for their first win over the Rockets since December 2016.
With the win, Clarksburg advances to the regional final for only the second time in school history. The team suffered a 63-39 loss to eventual state champions Whitman in the same round Mar. 5, 2016.
The Lady Coyotes look to keep their historic run going and advance to the state semifinals as they take on the Barons of B-CC (16-7) in the Regional Finals at Richard Montgomery Saturday afternoon. B-CC upset top-seeded Churchill 58-57 in overtime last night. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Saturday in Rockville.
