Motorists should prepare for more potential congestion around the MD-118/ Germantown Road interchange with I-270, as the State of Maryland will begin work to improve the drainage around the Germantown exit.
This month, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a project to upgrade and improve highway drainage systems at the I-270/Germantown Road interchange. The $906,000 project should be complete spring 2020.
Motorists can expect narrowed ramp lanes during construction with some weekend total loop ramp closures for pipe crossings, according to a MDOT press release. There may also be occasional single lane closures during off-peak hours on mainline I-270. MDOT SHA’s contractor, Dunkirk-based, Old Line Construction, Inc., is permitted to work Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, and Sunday nights through Friday mornings between 8:00 pm and 5:00 am, said MDOT.
While the work and any closures should be conducted outside of rush hours — after 9:00 am and before 3:00 pm, MDOT says “drivers should stay alert for additional road work as this project is within the limits of the I-270 at Watkins Mill Road interchange and the I-270 Innovative Congestion Relief projects.”
The new interchange being constructed at Watkins Mill Road in Gaithersburg, a little more than 4,000 feet north of where Quince Orchard Road crosses under I-270. It will provide both northbound and southbound entrance to I-270 and allow traffic to exit I-270 from both directions to go either east on Watkins Mill Road to Rt. 355 or west to Clopper Road.
The 1.25-mile project extends between MD 124 (Montgomery Village Avenue) and the Great Seneca Creek crossing near Game Preserve Road in Gaithersburg. Montgomery County contributed $4.9 million for the design and engineering phase of the project.
