“The Legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer” Celebrates Black History and Women’s History Month at BlackRock Ton

Montgomery County’s Office of Human Rights and Commission for Women will present a film screening of “This Little Light of Mine: The Legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer.” The free event will take place at 7:00 pm tonight, Friday, March 1 at the BlackRock Center for the Arts located at 12901 Town Commons Drive in Germantown.

The film tells the story of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. A panel discussion with Ms. Willie King and Rev. Dr. Ruby Reese Moone, Civil Rights champions who knew and worked with Fannie Lou Hamer, as well as Robin Hamilton, the film maker and Nicole Y. Drew, President of the Commission for Women will follow the screening. Light refreshments will be served.

“We are delighted to be partnering with the Commission for Women as we close out Black History Month and enter Women’s History Month with this powerful film,” said Office of Human Rights Director Jim Stowe. “Robin Hamilton, the film maker has delivered a moving documentary that captures the raw and compelling truth of the civil rights struggle through the courageous and inspiring life of a true civil rights warrior, Fannie Lou Hamer.”

“We are pleased to be working with the Office of Human Rights in the celebrations of Black and Women’s History Months,” said Montgomery County Commission for Women Executive Director Jodi Finkelstein. “The event provides a wonderful opportunity for individuals to learn about civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and meet our president, Nicole Y. Drew, after her remarks as part of the post-movie panel discussion.”
