Two-Alarm Fire Damages Three Germantown Homes

At least one family has been displaced from their home, and two neighboring homes suffered damage as a fire ripped through a single-family home on Neerwinder Street in Germantown Monday night.

MCFRS emergency call center received the call shortly before 11:00 pm on Monday, Jan. 28 and first arriving units arrived to find the two-story house fully involved in heavy fire, according to Pete Piringer, senior spokesman for Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service. A second alarm was called as firefighters began to attack the fire in the 20517 Neerwinder Street, which is in the Waters Landing neighborhood.

All four occupants of the house where fire started managed to escape unhurt, and fire officials ordered the evacuation of several nearby homes as the intense heat from the fire began to damage those structures. Firefighters were forced to begin protecting those exposures.

Piringer said that 95 firefighters battled the blaze. Piringer reported that the rear of the home of origin suffered some structural collapse from the fire which did significant damage to the house, and some damage do nearby homes. Six people, four occupants of the house of origin and two residents of neighboring homes were evaluated for injuries by EMS, but no major injuries were reported. At least one family will be displaced, and Piringer said it is likely that one of the families in the neighboring homes may be displaced as well, due to the damage to that house.

Efforts to extinguish the fire and air temperatures below freezing created icy conditions on Neerwinder Street and surrounding streets, which required Montgomery County Division of Highways crews to come out sand and salt the roadways to make them safe for travel.
