Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Germantown Area

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Germantown area and the northwestern portion of Montgomery County beginning at 4:00 pm Thursday afternoon until 4:00 am Friday morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. “Total snow accumulations 1- to 2-inches expected. The steadiest snow is expected this evening,” said the National Weather Service. “Plan on slippery road conditions and sidewalks. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute, especially after sunset as temperatures fall below freezing.”

The area is bracing for a storm which will bring wintery weather during the evening commute. “Snow will develop late this afternoon into this evening and continue into the overnight hours. While accumulations are forecast to be light, around an inch, any untreated road surfaces and sidewalks may turn icy as temperatures fall below freezing after sunset,” said the National Weather Service in a statement about the potential for winter weather during Thursday’s commute for the Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas.

“The greatest threat for impact from this light snowfall during evening rush hour will be north and west of Interstate 95 from Baltimore to Fredericksburg and also near Interstate 66 in northern Virginia. If you plan on commuting this evening, be aware of the potential for travel disruptions. Plan ahead by allowing for extra travel time, and consider using public transportation and telework options," said the National Weather Service.
