BOE Names Principal of New Clarksburg Elementary School
The Board of Education appoints the principal for the new Clarksburg elementary school scheduled to open at the beginning of the next school year.
At a Board of Education meeting held Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Board named Yolanda R. Allen as the principal of the Clarksburg Village Site No. 2 Elementary School. The new school which has not been officially named will be located at 22500 Sweetspire Drive in Clarksburg, on the 9.8-acre lot adjacent to the Clarksburg Village Center shopping center. Once completed the school is expected to have a capacity of 741 students in grades K through 5 and will be part of the Clarksburg High School Cluster.
The newly named principal is currently the principal at Goshen Elementary School in Gaithersburg. Allen was appointed to that post in 2013. Goshen Elementary School had an enrollment of 621 students in grades Pre-K through Grade 5 in 2017-2018, according to Montgomery County Public Schools. Goshen Elementary has an ESOL student population of 22.1 percent, and 41.5 percent of its students are part of the Free and Reduced Meals (FARMS) program, while 15.1 percent of the student population is made up of students with disabilities.
The new school will address the student enrollment growth at schools in the Clarksburg Cluster, primarily due to new home construction in the Arora Hills and Clarksburg Village communities. Revised student enrollment projections indicate that Cedar Grove Elementary School will exceed capacity by 193 students and Wilson Wims Elementary School will exceed capacity by 594 students by the 2024–2025 school year.
On November 27, the Board of Education approved Superintendent Dr. Jack Smith’s boundary recommendation for the new Clarksburg elementary school scheduled to open at the beginning of the next school year. Smith’s recommendation for the boundaries of the new school would reassign three neighborhood zones currently assigned to Wilson Wims ES, and reassign two zones currently attending Cedar Grove ES to Wims ES.
The new school open with Grades K–4 in September 2019, and that students currently in fourth grade at Wims and Cedar Grove elementary schools would remain at those schools for the 2019-2020 school year, rather than move to a new school for fifth grade. Beginning with the 2020–2021 school year, the new school would serve Grades K–5.
