Beginner’s Luck Wins ‘Germantown Gal’ $24,476 on the Virtual Ponies

January 8, 2019

Following her boyfriend’s advice and encouragement paid off last week for a Germantown woman, who earned a trip to the Maryland Lottery Winner’s Circle to celebrate her $24,476 Racetrax Superfecta win.

“Germantown Gal,” as she dubbed herself, said she sometimes plays scratch-off games, but rarely plays Racetrax, which is her boyfriend’s favorite game. The couple were together at Shady Grove Beer & Wine in Gaithersburg last week when he encouraged her to try her luck.

“I said, ‘If you don’t play, you don’t win,’” her boyfriend said with a smile.

The 20-something unidentified education employee said she was “just along for the ride” but, at her boyfriend’s urging, placed a 20-draw Superfecta bet. She selected four numbers she sees at work: 12, 9, 4 and 1, hoping the horses in the computer-animated game would finish in that exact order. The result had her boyfriend incredulous over what he termed her “beginner’s luck.”

On the sixth race out of the 20 on her ticket, the “horses” delivered her big win. The “Germantown Gal” plans to put her windfall in the bank for now.

Her Lottery luck also gives Shady Grove Beer & Wine reason to celebrate. The store located at 15904 Shady Grove Road earns a bonus from the Lottery of $244.76 — equal to one percent of the prize — for selling a winning Racetrax ticket valued at $10,000 or more.
