Northwest Girls Outlast Seneca Valley in Battle of Unbeatens

The Lady Jaguars came out of their match-up with crosstown rivals Seneca Valley to remain the only unbeaten girl's basketball team in the Germantown area, as they defeated the Screaming Eagles, 53-47, to take the road win at Seneca Valley on Friday night.

The Lady Jags were led by junior Laurel Cotton who had 18 points on six field goals and two three-pointers.

In a game that was tight throughout, the Lady Eagles jumped out to a quick 13-10 lead at the end of the first, but the Northwest ladies applied the pressure in the second quarter outscoring Seneca 16-9 as Cotton, and sophomore Ashley Mostrom combined for 14 points in the second quarter. Mostrom would finish the game with 8 points, all of which came in the second quarter to give the Jags a 26-22 lead going into halftime.

Both teams came into the game unbeaten as Seneca notched two road wins last week, beating Kennedy 51-30 in the season opener on Thursday, Dec. 6 and Einstein, 47-40 on Saturday afternoon. Seneca then easily defeated Wheaton in their home opener on Monday, Dec. 10 by a score of 64-21.

Seneca Valley’s junior point guard Jasia Oliver led all scorers in the Battle of Germantown with 23 points on four field goals, three free throws, and four shots from behind the three-point line. Sophomore center Bryana Barber added eight points for the Lady Eagles.

The game remained close throughout, each team putting up just eight points in the third quarter, as Northwest clung to a four-point advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Northwest junior Jordyn Herwood dropped in eight of her 10 points to help the Jags extend their lead and secure victory. Herwood made two field goals and shot four-for-four from the foul line in the final stanza.

Northwest remains unbeaten, with home wins over Watkins Mill by a score of 72-45 in the opener at home on Friday, Dec. 7 and a 51-16 trouncing of Magruder on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

The Lady Jags will travel to face 3-1 Rockville on Thursday, Dec. 20. Rockville earned their first victory last night, a 41-34 home win over Blair. Seneca Valley is also on the road for their next game a matchup with 1-3 Walter Johnson next Thursday. The Bobcats are on a three-game losing streak, after losing in overtime to Poolesville, 77-66, on Friday night.
