Northwest Boys Earn First Victory Over Unbeaten Seneca Valley

December 15, 2018

The Northwest Boys basketball team completed the sweep over cross-town rival Seneca Valley as both teams came out of the Eagle’s Nest with victories on Friday night, in the first round of the Battle of Germantown. The Jaguars defeated Seneca Valley, 63-49.

The Jags entered Friday’s game winless in the early going with losses to Watkins Mill and Magruder last week, while the Screaming Eagles were riding a three-game win streak with victories over Kennedy, Einstein, and Wheaton.

However, when cross-town rivals clash pass results are thrown out the window as both teams are playing for bragging rights. The Jags jumped out to a slight three-point lead in the first quarter thanks in part to junior Marcus Stubbs’ eight points in the first. Stubbs and senior Tyrone Mayer would lead the Jaguars with 12 points each. Stubbs finished with four field goals, one three-pointer, and shot one of two free throws. Mayer had three field goals, one three-ball, and shot three-for-four from the foul line.

The Jags led by seven, 31-24 at halftime, thanks to their ability to hit the long-ball. Northwest hit three from beyond the arc in the second quarter, one each from Stubbs, freshman Benito Cala, and senior Shahab Mastori.

Seneca hung tight in the third quarter as each team scored 13 points. Junior Elijah Hyson led all scorers with 18 points on six field goals while making six of eight shots from the charity stripe. Also in double-digits for the Eagles was senior Kile Toliver with 11 points on three long-balls and a field goal.

But in the fourth quarter, it was the Jags’ play from beyond the arc which allowed them to extend their lead. Just like in the second, Northwest hit a trio of threes this time they came from senior Anthony Fuentes, freshman

Camonte Lee, and senior Tyrone Mayer. Fuentes and Lee would both finish with nine points on the night.

The Jags will travel to face 2-2 Rockville on Thursday, Dec. 20. Rockville is on a two-game win streak narrowly defeating Blair last night, a 47-46, and squeaking by Quince Orchard on Tuesday by a score of 48-47. Seneca Valley will host 1-2 Walter Johnson next Thursday. The Bobcats earned the first victory in a win over Poolesville, 61-52, on Friday night.
