MCFRS Respond to Two UpCounty Fires on Tuesday

Firefighters responded to two working fires in the UpCounty on Tuesday which left the occupants of two residences displaced.

The first was a house fire in the 26100 block of Purdum Road in Damascus. The initial call came into the Montgomery County Emergency Call system at about 12:30 pm on Tuesday, December 11. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire at the one-story mobile home with a cinderblock structure on Purdum Road near Bethesda Church Road.

The home was at the end of a long driveway in Damascus. Firefighter arrived to find it fully-involved in a non-hydrant area, which required shuttling water via tanker truck from the hydrants to the scene to extinguish the fire.

The fire did severe damage to the home and investigators determined the cause was a malfunction of within the furnace in the kitchen area, according to MCFRS senior spokesman Pete Piringer. The fire did more the $40,000 in damage to the small home, which did not have smoke alarms. More than 60 firefighters and 20 units were called to the scene to battle the blaze. Thankfully, no one was injured. However the lone occupant of the home has been left homeless as a result.

The second fire on Tuesday was a townhouse fire which occurred in the 12900 block of Pickering Court in Germantown. The initial call came into at about 7:00 pm on December 11.

MCFRS personnel arrived to find smoke pouring out the door of a middle-of-the-row townhouse on Pickering Drive in the Water’s Landing section of Germantown. The fire was determined to be in the kitchen of the townhouse. According to fire officials, the three occupants of the townhouse were able to escape to safety and were uninjured. No injuries were reported among the firefighters. The family of three has been displaced by the damage to the unit.
