Evans Chosen as President and O’Neill as VP of Board of Ed

At the Montgomery County Board of Education’s reorganization meeting held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, the Board selected Shebra Evans to serve as the president of the Board of Education. Patricia O’Neill was elected as vice president. Both officers will serve a one-year term.

“I am honored to be chosen by my peers to serve as president of the Board as we look to plan for the future,” said Evans. “I look forward to working closely with my colleagues, the leadership of Montgomery County Public Schools, the County Council, and the County Executive to ensure the more than 163,000 students in our district receive a world-class education that helps them meet their fullest potential.”

Evans, a resident of Silver Spring and represents District 4, was elected to her first four-year term in 2016. For the past year she has served as the vice president of the Board and a member of the Board’s Fiscal Management Committee. Evans serves on the Maryland Association of Boards of Education's Resolution Committee, as well as the Policies and Procedures Committee.

Evans replaces former president Mike Durso, who elected not run for re-election after his term expired.

Evans received a degree in Economics and Finance from Tennessee State University. She has two children who attend MCPS schools.
