Work has begun at the future site of the Topgolf complex in Germantown. “We have broken ground on the venue and plan to open at the end of 2019,” according to Morgan Schaaf, Communications Manager with Topgolf.
Back in November of 2016, Topgolf, the premier golf entertainment complex company, announced Germantown as its third location planned in the Washington, D.C. region and it’s first in Maryland. Topgolf has begun construction on the 65,000-square-foot venue with an expected opening in late 2019.
"Building in Germantown presents an exciting opportunity for Topgolf to establish the first entertainment destination in upper Montgomery County," said Topgolf Director of Real Estate Development Devin Charhon at the time the project was announced. "For 11 years, DC has been a top market for Topgolf, and as we look to expand in the area, Germantown is a natural fit. It's a fast-growing community that offers easy access to DC and is frequently recognized as one of the best places to live and work. This location offers tremendous potential for Topgolf, and we are looking forward to serving this community in the near future."
The company received approval from the Montgomery County Planning Board to build on the 12.69 acre site on Century Boulevard back in July of 2017. However, the Traffic Mitigation Agreement which was a condition of the approval was not reached and filed until May of 2018.
The location for the complex is next to the Fairfield Inn and Suites and adjacent to the Regal Cinemas 14 at the corner of Century Blvd. and Airpark Drive. The proposed Germantown site is owned by the Matan Companies.
"The recent opening of the Premium Outlets and now the Topgolf announcement represent a major shift in providing the residents and employees of northern Montgomery County a true live, work, play environment," said Mark Matan of the Matan Companies. "This will ultimately translate into a better quality of life, more jobs and a reduction in the traffic load on I-270 headed toward the Beltway."
The three-level venue – which would be open year-round – includes up to 3,000 square feet of private event space and 102 climate-controlled hitting bays that can host up to six players at one time. Nearly half of all Topgolf guests describe themselves as "non-golfers."
In terms of economic impact, Topgolf Germantown would create approximately 300 temporary construction jobs and more than 500 full- and part-time jobs. Its economic output in Germantown alone is expected to be nearly $300 million over a 10-year-period, according to a third-party audit.
