Area residents will have a new option for dining in the Germantown Town Center as Glen Burnie-based Mission BBQ has submitted an application to remodel the former Ruby Tuesday’s location in on Century Boulevard.
As was originally reported by MoCo Show, Mission BBQ has submitted a development application to the Montgomery County Planning Board to “retrofit and remodel” the location at 19800 Century Boulevard. The application also calls for the creation of an outdoor patio dining area at the Germantown location.
Mission BBQ is the brainchild of founders Bill Kraus and Steve Newton, who came up with “mission”—to honor America’s military, police officers, firefighters, and first responders—and then developed a menu to carry out that plan through a fast-casual concept, Mission BBQ.
According to Restaurant Business magazine, after the first store opened on Sept. 11, 2011 Mission BBQ in Glen Burnie, the fast-casual chain become one of the fastest-growing restaurant chains. The fast-casual chain, which expects to finish 2018 with 80 locations in 16 states, gives a “significant portion” of its profits back to the community, through military nonprofits and charities for police and firefighters.
Mission BBQ locations are adorned with military and first responder patches and pictures, and every restaurant shuts down for two minutes at noon for the playing of the national anthem. The kitchens stop working, cash registers go silent — everything stops.
“We believe there is nothing more American than BBQ,” said the chain’s website. “And nobody more American than the brave men and women who have sworn to protect and serve Our Communities and Our Country. We do what we do for the love of our soldiers, firefighters, police officers, first responders—all our loved ones in service.”
There is no timeline for the new Mission BBQ location to open, the application has been submitted to the County Planning Board, but no plans have been completed as of yet. There is another Mission BBQ location in Montgomery County, located in Rockville.
The location on Century Boulevard location was the previously the home to the Ruby Tuesday restaurant which closed permanently in October. Ruby Tuesday has closed more than 51 locations in the U.S. this year, amid falling sales and traffic. The company is half the size it was a decade ago, and has shuttered more than 150 locations since the end of 2016.
