BlackRock Screening of 'Tyrus' Shines a Light on Legendary Artist Tyrus Wong

November 1, 2018

As part of its On Screen/In Person Film series, BlackRock Center for the Arts will be screening Tyrus, a documentary about the genius behind classic films like Bambi and Rebel Without a Cause on Sunday, November 4 at 6:00 pm.

Tyrus is a feature-length documentary by Pamela Tom that follows the Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong. Tyrus and his father immigrated to America in 1919 right before the fall of the Chinese Empire. Tyrus, a multi-award winning film, reveals how the Disney artist overcame a life of poverty and racism to later become one of the most celebrated illustrators of his time. His Eastern-influenced paintings caught the eye of Walt Disney, who ended up making Wong the inspirational sketch artist behind the animated classic, Bambi.

Tyrus was also a key player in the illustrations for classic films such as Sands of Iwo Jima, Rebel Without a Cause, Harper, and The Wild Bunch. Featuring a slew of interviews from family and fellow artists, including co-workers who worked with him at Disney, Tyrus shines a much-needed spotlight on an artist that has had a major impact on American art and popular culture since the release of Bambi in 1942.

Following the showing, there will be a post-show discussion.

On Screen/In Person is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts.

BlackRock Center for the Arts is a cultural cornerstone and the leading venue for the performing and visual arts in Upper Montgomery County Maryland. Since 2002, the nonprofit arts center has been providing the community with diverse performing arts programs, free gallery exhibitions and arts education experiences in a welcoming and intimate setting close to home. The dynamic facility houses two art galleries, two theaters presenting more than 40 performances per year, and numerous classrooms and studios where year-round classes in the arts are offered for all ages.
