Seneca Creek State Park to Host Blair Witch Project Hike

October 26, 2018

It was a film that change Hollywood, scared millions, and even made some folks sick. The Blair Witch Project is set in Burkittsville, Maryland, but much of it was filmed in Seneca Creek State Park on the border of Germantown and Gaithersburg.

On Sunday, Oct. 28 Seneca Creek State Park will host a Blair Witch Heritage Hike at 2:00 pm to tour the shooting locations of this little film which turned Hollywood on its ear.

In October 1997, two young filmmakers began work on the Blair Witch Project in Seneca Creek State Park. The film was written, directed, and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez. The film was made for just $60,000 and went on to make $248.6 million in the box office.

Shot over just eight days with a 68-page script that called for chunks to be improvised, Blair Witch wowed critics with its grainy footage, realistic kids and unsettling finale.

On Sunday you can join Ranger Ledbetter at the park to learn how this horror classic came to be filmed at Seneca Creek State Park. Advance registration is required and space is limited. Register by calling 301-924-2127. Cost is $2 per person.
