KAT Second Stage Brings a Spoonful of Entertainment to BlackRock with Mary Poppins Jr.

October 24, 2018

BlackRock Center for the Arts, in partnership with the Kensington Arts Theatre’s Second Stage Family Theatre program, has announced will present a production of Mary Poppins Jr., a musical based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the beloved Walt Disney film.

The reinvented Disney classic bringing theatre “by kids for families” will be performed on Friday, Nov. 9, with two shows daily on the weekend, Saturday, Nov. 10 and Sunday. Nov. 11 at 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm. Tickets for all performances are priced at $15.

Under the direction of Fred Zirm, Ian Brown-Gorrell and Ariella Bayer, KAT Second Stage incorporates an imaginative approach to the popular Broadway musical by bringing to life some of the classic moments and tunes like “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Step in Time,” and “Feed the Birds” in some unexpected ways. Mary Poppins Jr. is a more concise version of the timeless tale that is Mary Poppins that is lively enough to entertain kids and adults alike.

“With this extraordinarily talented cast and creative team, ‘Anything Can Happen’,” said KAT Second Stage Production Manager, Jennifer Morrissey. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring our company and this show to BlackRock’s beautiful venue, and we look forward to delighting audiences of all ages!”

Since its establishment 17 years ago, KAT Second Stage has never wavered on maintaining its focus on the development of young performers in the DC area. Giving these young starlets meaningful experience by having them put on shorter, high quality productions that are suitable for the whole family has given the established production company a very recognizable name in the DC theatre community. The budding production company known for selling out shows has seen packed houses for performances like Peter Pan Jr., The Wizard of Oz Young Performers’ Edition, Aladdin Jr., Annie Jr., and many more.

KAT Second Stage is one of the first production companies in the area to partner with BlackRock Center for the Arts as part of its Creative Consortium initiative; the progressive performing arts venue collaborates with several production companies in the area to put on entertaining and memorable theater presentations.

BlackRock Center for the Arts is a cultural cornerstone and the leading venue for the performing and visual arts in Upper Montgomery County Maryland. Since 2002, the nonprofit arts center has been providing the community with diverse performing arts programs, free gallery exhibitions and arts education experiences in a welcoming and intimate setting close to home. The dynamic facility houses two art galleries, two theaters presenting more than 40 performances per year, and numerous classrooms and studios where year-round classes in the arts are offered for all ages.
