Germantown Rallies to Help Family of Fallen Northwest Student

Friends, neighbors, and schoolmates of Josh Snyder have rallied around his family today after news of the 17-year-old Northwest High School student’s death reached Germantown.

Friends have started a GoFundMe account to help his family offset some of the costs associated with his death and burial. As of 3:00 pm just hours after it was created the fund had raised $5,300.

The Northwest senior was killed on Wednesday afternoon on his way to a recently started a physical therapy internship while driving on southbound I-270 when his car veered to into the left shoulder and crashed into a box truck which was parked in the shoulder just south of Montrose Road in Bethesda.

According to the GoFundMe page, Josh loved wrestling and was a member of the Jags wrestling team; he was also part of the schools very successful team. He played football for a year, but then became a fan. “You could always spot him cheering for the NWHS football team because of that familiar red hair,” said the posting. “When he was younger he begrudgingly joined the neighborhood swim team where he made lots of friends.”

Today at Northwest, students placed flowers at parking space 784, which was Josh’s parking space in the Northwest lot, to honor their fallen classmate. The parking spots around his space were filled with messages of love for Josh, expressing sorrow at his untimely passing.

Northwest High School held a moment of silence for Josh this morning. The school also had a support team of counselors joining the staff at Northwest on Thursday to provide counseling and support to students. Students were able to leave class to go to the counseling office at any point throughout the day if they feel the need, according to Northwest Principal Jimmy D’Andrea.

Josh Snyder is survived by his parents, Jason and Denise Snyder, his sister Rachel Snyder, and his twin sister Whitney Snyder, according to the GoFundMe site.
