Local Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

Montgomery County Public Schools has a total 151 semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship competition, 14 from local UpCounty high schools. The semifinalists will compete nationally for scholarships that will be announced in the spring. The competition is sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The MCPS semifinalists come from 16 high schools: Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Montgomery Blair, Winston Churchill, Damascus, Albert Einstein, Walter Johnson, Richard Montgomery, Northwest, Paint Branch, Poolesville, Quince Orchard, Rockville, Sherwood, Wheaton, Walt Whitman and Thomas S. Wootton.

The schools with the most finalists are Montgomery Blair (42), Richard Montgomery (36), and Poolesville and Winston Churchill (12).

Among the finalists were: Mital R. Patel of Damascus High School; Pavan Bhat of Northwest High School, as well as Clara Benadon, Vincent W. Bian, John A. Carbonell, Amanda Y. Chu, Jason J. Lee, Daniel X. Li, Macy A. Palmer, Esha A. Parikh, Brandon T. Summers, Sivani Sundaram, April R. Xu, and Grace C. Zheng of all of Poolesville High School.

Semifinalists from MCPS were selected from among high school juniors who were top scorers on the 2017 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 16,000 semifinalists across the nation will be considered for advancement to the finalist stage of the competition.

Finalists will be considered for $2,500 National Merit scholarships, plus additional corporate-sponsored and college/university-sponsored scholarships that will be announced later in the school year.
