In the Battle of Falcons, the Poolesville Falcons defeated the Winters Mill High School Falcons 45 to 33 on Friday, thanks in large part to Colin Hemingway’s five touchdown night.
The Winters Mill Falcons made the 45 mile trip from Westminster in Carroll County to Poolesville on Friday night, and for the fourth straight year the Poolesville Falcons came out on top. Last year, Poolesville pulled out a 21-10 victory.
Friday’s win is the second straight victory for the Poolesville team which defeated Kennedy 26-6 last week to earn their first victory of the season.
On Friday, Poolesville’s Colin Hemingway scored twice in the first quarter to stake the home team to a 13-0 lead. The junior running back scored the first touchdown on 52-yard run in the early going and powered into the endzone from the two-yard line with seconds remaining in the first stanza.
Hemingway was the leading rusher in Montgomery County coming into the game with Winters Mill with 279 yards and five touchdowns. He added at least 85 yards and four more touchdowns to that total on Friday.
However, Winters Mill would not go quietly. The Carroll County Falcons would tie the game in the second half. Winters Mill first found the endzone on a two-yard touchdown run from Alex Barnes two minutes into the second quarter.
Winters Mill would tie the game thanks to a Poolesville miscue, when Kaden Ross picked up a Poolesville lateral which was mishandled and ran 35-yards to the endzone to tie the game 13 apiece.
However, the tie would not last. Poolesville’s Trevor Riggs would take the ensuing kick off on a 70-yard touchdown run with just 13 seconds remaining in the half to give the hometown Falcons the halftime lead 19-13.
Poolesville would pick up right where they left off after halftime with a drive culminating in a three-yard touchdown run by Colin Hemingway. His third of the game to extend the lead to 26-13 in the third quarter.
Winters Mill would put together their own drive which ended in a touchdown as the visiting Falcon quarterback found the endzone on a QB keeper to cut the lead to 26-20 with under a minute left in the third quarter.
Hemingway would get the ball into the endzone for a fourth time on a 27-yard pass from sophomore Aaron Brown to extend the lead to 33-20. The junior running back would score his fifth touchdown on a 30-yard run. Poolesville led 39-20 with 7:55 remaining in the game.
Winters Mill was not done, Barnes connected on a 10-yard pass with Cayden Beard to cut the lead to 29-27 with seven minutes remaining.
Less than a minute later, the home team was back in the endzone thanks to a 30-yard run by Desmond Brown. Poolesville led 45-27 with 5:45 left in the game. Winters Mill would cap the scoring just 20-second later on a 68-yard pass from Barnes to Austin Plummer to give the visiting Falcons 33 points.
The 45-33 victory by Poolesville improves their record to 2-1 on the season. Next week they will travel to Colesville to play the Blake Bengals who are also 2-1 coming off a 32-0 victory over Magruder on Friday. The Bengals have not allowed opponents to score since holding Damascus to 28 on opening week. Blake beat Springbrook, 36-0 in week two. The game is scheduled for 6:30 pm at Blake High School.
