A tip from the public has led to the arrest of one of the women seen assaulting a grocery clerk in a surveillance video, which police released earlier this week.
Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged Ashley Nachelle Watts, 23, of the 20500 block of Golf Course Drive in Germantown, with the August 11 robbery that occurred at the Shoppers grocery store at 18066 Mateny Road in Germantown.
The investigation by detectives determined that Watts entered the grocery store, approached the 47-year-old female employee who was behind a counter and demanded baby formula which was kept in a locked case. The video which police released on Monday, Aug. 20, shows that Watts and another woman pushing a double stroller, and then Watts moves behind the counter and begins to assault the employee and attempt to grab the package of baby formula. The video shows both women then flee from the store without any baby formula.
Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service personnel responded and transported the employee to a local hospital for treatment of her non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators received multiple tips which led to the identification of Watts as one of the suspects. Investigators also identified and interviewed the second female suspect seen in the video wearing a blonde wig. During the investigation of the second suspect’s involvement, it was determined that she did not participate in this robbery.
On Tuesday, Aug. 21, Watts was arrested on the strength of a Montgomery County arrest warrant charging her with one count of robbery, one count of second-degree assault, and one count of destruction of property. According to Officer Rick Goodale, a spokesperson for the MCPD, detectives said that Watts was attempting to obtain the formula for her child, and she and showed no remorse for her actions in assaulting the clerk. She was released after posting a $3,500 bond. She is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on September 19.
