Jeep Destroyed by Fireworks During Fourth of July Celebration in Poolesville

The Fourth of July celebration was a blast, but not in the way the party goers had intended.

It seems a group of about two dozen people gathered to celebrate the Fourth and set off some fireworks on rural Hunting Quarter Road in Poolesville, according to MCFRS senior spokesperson Pete Piringer. Hunting Quarter Road is a narrow one-mile strip of roadway just east of the Potomac River and west of River Road and is part of the McKee Beshers Wildlife Management Area.

Somehow a mortar detonated in a jeep parked on the road, destroying it, said Piringer. The vehicle fire was not reported to MCFRS, until the Jeep was found by Maryland Division of Natural Resources Police on Thursday morning, July 5.

Maryland DNR police reported the finding the burnt out Jeep and with various fireworks strewn about the area. MCFRS investigators responded and spoke to a person of interest. Investigators determined that several attempts were made to extinguish the fire by the folks attending the party, but those attempts were unsuccessful, and the Jeep was destroyed.

No injuries were reported. The burnt out hulk of Jeep was left on the road. It is expected that the mishandled fireworks did about $5,000 in damage fully destroying the Jeep.
