Convicted Killer, Facing Life in Prison, Found Dead in Boyds Jail Cell
Montgomery County Police confirmed that detectives are investigating the apparent suicide of convicted killer Thierry Kinshala Nkusu at the Montgomery County Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation facility at 22880 Whelan Lane in Boyds.
Nkusu, 35, was found unresponsive in his cell on Wednesday, July 4 at about 6:00 pm. Nkusu had used a bed sheet to suspend himself in an apparent suicide attempt. Correctional staff began life-saving efforts and summonsed Fire and Rescue personnel, however, Nkusu was unable to be revived. Additional investigation determined that Nkusu had left several handwritten suicide notes.
Nkusu, of Silver Spring, was sentenced on Monday, July 2 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2016 murder of his pregnant fiancée. Nkusu received the maximum sentence for first-degree murder in Maryland after was found guilty in a two-week trial by jury in April.
In April of 2016, Nkusu killed 36-year-old Maria Veronica Mbunga, who was five months pregnant at the time. Takoma Park police arrested Nkusu a day after Mbunga was found suffering from multiple stab wounds inside her Houston Avenue apartment.
Nkusu’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. Today the OCME ruled the cause of death a hanging and the manner of death a suicide.
