Fire Destroys Maintenance Shed and Equipment in Seneca Creek State Park

A fire in a maintenance shed on the grounds of Seneca Creek State Park sent a plume of dark smoke into the sky that could been throughout the Germantown area on Saturday evening. The fire destroyed the shed, along with the farm tractor and boat contained inside the shed.

At about 6:40 pm Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service units were called to the park for the fire, according to Senior MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer. First arriving units encountered heavy fire conditions at the 40-foot-square shed and an adjacent propane tank which was venting. Firefighters had to contend with the fire and the danger of the large propane tank igniting.

Due to the fire’s location inside the park, it was a non-hydrant area and a brigade of four water tankers responded to provide water to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Maryland State Office of the Fire Marshall. Piringer said the cause appears to be accidental. The fire seems to have started in the area of the tractor. Piringer estimated that the fire did about $150,000 in damage to the shed and its contents. No injuries were reported.
