Police Investigating Gunshots Fired into a Townhouse

June 6, 2018

The normal routine of a sunny Wednesday morning in a Germantown neighborhood was shattered when gunshots rang out as residents were preparing to leave for work or school.

Detectives from the 5th District are investigating why someone fired at least five rounds into a townhouse in the 13500 block of Demetrias Way and fled the area in a vehicle. According to Officer Rick Goodale with the Montgomery County Police, 5th District officers responded to the area for numerous calls reporting shots fired at 9:39 am on Wednesday, June 6. Goodale said that a man was wearing a mask and gloves when he shot a number of rounds into a townhouse while standing outside the structure.

The townhouse that was targeted faces into a courtyard that shots came from the courtyard area. Four bullet holes could be seen in the siding of the townhouse between the first and second floors, and a window on the first floor had one visible bullet hole.

After responding, police set up a perimeter around the area in an effort to catch the suspect. Investigators also used police dogs to help search for evidence in the area. Two nearby schools, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School and Lake Seneca Elementary School were placed in Shelter-in-Place mode for about an hour as police conducted a search for the suspect.

This incident is the second time in eight days that police were called to the neighborhood to investigate gunfire. Last Tuesday, police responded to a home invasion robbery in the 13600 block of Demetrias Way, which took place shortly after midnight on May 29. “Investigators are looking into the possibility that the two incidents might be related, but we don’t know that at this early juncture in the investigation,” said Goodale.

In that incident two men, one armed, forced entry into the townhouse. An adult female reported that she heard the sound of gunshots inside the home and went to investigate. The victim was confronted by the two suspects who then threatened her with the handgun and demanded cash. The suspects obtained property from the townhouse and fled.

The suspect in the home invasion, was described as an African American male in his 30’s and is approximately 6-feet, 1-inch tall. The second suspect is described as an African American male between 20 and 30 years old, approximately 5-feet, 9-inches tall, and weighs approximately 250 pounds.

This shooting marks the eighth time that gunfire has erupted in Germantown since January 1, 2018.

Detectives urge anyone with information about the suspects or circumstances of either the May 29 home invasion or the June 6 shooting on Demetrias Way to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5100. For those who wish to remain anonymous, Crime Solvers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to the arrest of the suspect(s). Tipsters can call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
