Police Officer Attends High School Graduation of Baby He Delivered on I-270 in 1999

Among the 300 or so seniors graduating from Frederick County’s Oakdale High School today, only one has had a police officer looking after them since the very second they were born. Today, the Montgomery County Police Officer that delivered him in a van on I-270 in Germantown back in 1999 watched the child he brought into the world graduate from high school.

Back on November 13, 1999, Montgomery County Police Officer Robert Hunt was conducting a traffic stop on I-270 in the area of Middlebrook Road in Germantown, when a man ran to the officer and explained that his wife was having a baby in their van.

On that night back in 1999 the Duboyce family lived on Lowfield Terrace in Germantown, and they were expecting their sixth child, according to an article published in the Frederick News-Post back in 1999. Joseph and Melissa Duboyce were rushing to the hospital as the contractions were getting serious. While on I-270, it became clear they weren’t going to make it to the hospital. The baby was coming. This was many years before Holy Cross Germantown would open.

The baby was born in the van, and when Officer Hunt got to the van, he found that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby boy’s neck. Officer Hunt, who was 28-year old at the time, removed the cord from the baby, cleared his airway, and the baby began to breathe. Soon an ambulance arrived, and mother and baby were transported to the hospital.

The Duboyce’s named the child Thomas Robert Duboyce. They gave him the middle name Robert in honor of Officer Robert Hunt.

Over the years, Officer Hunt and the Duboyce family stayed in contact. The Duboyce’s moved out of Germantown, but Officer Hunt remains on active duty in the 5th District.

Today, Officer Hunt, a now 24-year veteran of the MCPD, made the trip up to Mount Saint Mary’s University to attend the Oakdale High School graduation of now 18-year-old Thomas Robert Duboyce.
