5th District Police to Hold Read With a Cop Event at Target
Members of the Montgomery County Police Department’s 5th District in Germantown have partnered with Target in Germantown to hold a Read with a Cop event for young children.
The event will take place at the book section of the Target Store in the Milestone Shopping Center at 20908 Frederick Road in Germantown on Monday, June 4 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Young members of the community are encouraged come read with and listen to police officers reading books in both English and Spanish.
“Traditionally ‘Coffee with a Cop’ events have been geared towards adults and discussing crime trends and getting to know the local officers,” said 5th District Community Liaison Officer Marcus Dixon. “We thought it would be a good idea to do something geared toward children to make them comfortable around the officers that serve and protect them. Too often they only see officers when something goes wrong like a traffic accident or domestic violence, so want to build the trust in us not just with the adults, but in the children as well. Children also get exposed to violence.”
Dixon said that other MCPD districts in the County have held similar outreach efforts with Target and other business as well as faith communities and now the 5th District is trying to put a Germantown/UpCounty spin on the idea of police officers reading to young kids, making connections, and growing trust.
