One Victim Shot at Vigil for Slain Girl in Germantown

Montgomery County Police have confirmed to Germantown Pulse that one victim has been shot in the area of Sage Way in Germantown tonight.

   Germantown Pulse has learned that the victim is an adult male and was shot once in the head and transported to the Germantown Emergency Center, but has since been transported to a local trauma center by Montgomery County EMS.

   The shooting took place shortly before 8:00 pm near Sage Way, Cinnamon Drive, and Curry Powder Lane.  In the vicinity of the location where many residents had gathered for a vigil to honor the memory of 18-year-old Genesis McCarter-Berretto, the former Germantown Park resident who was shot and killed while attending a house party in Frederick early Sunday morning.

   After the shots rang out, those gathered for the vigil ran. 5th District Police responded and had detained a number of individuals in the area of the 7-Eleven store on the corner of Clopper Road and Matney Road.

   This incident is still in the early stages of the investigation. Montgomery County Police confirmed that it is an active investigation of a shooting with one victim but would not confirm any other details.

   McCarter-Berretto was shot a killed in the early morning hours of May 13 at a house party in Frederick. At approximately 1:46 am, officers of the Frederick Police Department responded to a residence in the 1800 block of Weybridge Road in Frederick for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, Officers located an adult female with a gunshot wound in her upper body, and a juvenile male with a gunshot wound in his lower leg, according to a Frederick Police Department release.

   The following morning, Frederick Police detectives arrested and charged Ean Lanell Davis-Lattimore, 17, of Frederick with the murder of McCarter-Berretto and attempted murder of the juvenile male.

   Tonight’s incident not the first time gunfire has erupted in the area of Sage Way and Cinnamon Drive. Less than a month ago, police responded to reports of a large group of youths fighting and the sound of gunfire in the area of Sage Way and Cinnamon Drive in Germantown shortly before 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 28. In that case, an unidentified 17-year-old male, from Gaithersburg, was charged with possession of a firearm, and reckless endangerment, among other charges, according to police.

Germantown Pulse will update the story about tonight’s shooting as soon as more news becomes available.
