Inmate Stops Prisoner from Killing Corrections Officer with Shiv
One inmate stopped another from killing a corrections officer with a prison shiv at the County jail on Sunday morning.
According to Montgomery County Police, an inmate at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Boyds attacked a corrections officer on Sunday morning and has been charged with Attempted First Degree Murder by Montgomery County Police.
Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – 5th District Investigative Section have charged Edgar Alfonso Borrera, 26, currently incarcerated at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility located at 22880 Whelan Lane in Boyds, with the attempted first-degree murder of a correctional officer.
On Sunday, May 6, at approximately 4:58 am, a correctional officer was assaulted by Borrera on an upper tier of the facility in front of the cells. According to MCPD, Borrera repeatedly punched and struck the victim about his face and upper body with a weapon fashioned from hard plastic and a milk carton. After the assault, another inmate rendered aid to the victim and attempted to contain Borrera by grabbing him. Other correctional officers responded to assist the victim. The inmate which assisted the officer was not identified.
The victim was transported to a hospital with multiple injuries to include fractured bones in his face and lacerations to his forehead.
Detectives located the weapon used by Borrera during the assault and seized it as evidence.
Borrera has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault of a correctional officer. According to Maryland Case Search, Borrera was serving time in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility awaiting a trial after being arrested on April 9 on charges of Indecent Exposure, Resisting Arrest, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Trespassing on Private Property stemming from an incident which took place in January of this year.
When he was arrested in April, Borrera was held without bond. After the latest charges, Borrera was again ordered held without bond. He is due in court for the initial charges on May 15, and will have a preliminary hearing on the attempted murder charges on June 1.
