Police Arrest Teen After Gunshot Rings Out During Street Fight

Montgomery County Police have arrested a Gaithersburg teenager after police say that teen fired a gunshot during a large street fight which was happening Saturday evening in Germantown.

Police responded to reports of a large group of youths fighting and the sound of gunfire in the area of Sage Way and Cinnamon Drive in Germantown shortly before 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 28. The shot sent the large group of youths running in all directions from the area.

According to 5th District Commander Capt. Mark Plazinski, responding officers received a description of the teen who fired one shot into the air during the melee. Officer Laura Zito spotted a suspect matching the description and followed the suspect into the tree line near the bus stop at the corner of Clopper Road and Mateny Road. “Officer Zito should be commended for running into a wooded area after what she believed to an armed suspect. She apprehended the teen and located a handgun on the suspect,” said Plazinski.

The unidentified 17-year-old male, from Gaithersburg, was charged with possession of a firearm, and reckless endangerment, among other charges, according to Plazinski.

Police had cordoned off a large area near the intersection of Sage Way and Cinnamon Drive as they investigated the incident. Officers could be seen searching the area for evidence on Saturday evening.

This is the second incident involving the discharge of a firearm in Germantown in a week. In the early morning hours of Monday, April 23, police responded the reports of gunshots at Fountain Hills Local Park on Liberty Mill Road in Germantown. Investigators later located four shotgun shell casings in the park.
