BlackRock Presents Solo Exhibit By Lillian Bayley Hoover in The Kay Gallery

Infused with geometry and animated by issues of abstraction, Lillian Bayley Hoover’s paintings explore the ordinary, awkward, overlooked, and imperfect elements of our material environment. The relationship between unfettered, dynamic sky and the static restraint of banal architecture figures prominently in the series of works presented in her solo exhibition entitled “In This World.”

BlackRock Center for the Arts will present a series of 15 oil paintings on panel by Baltimore artist Lillian Bayley Hoover in her solo exhibition “In This World” from Saturday, April 21 through Saturday, June 2 in the Kay Gallery.

These places depicted in Bayley Hoover’s works are not special; we do not encounter the sublime. The architecture interrupts, compresses, frames the sky, grounding the viewer and locating her in this world. Mindful and appreciative of the fleeting moment, yet still bearing the history of the place, Hoover’s paintings are comfortable with awkwardness. Simple, quiet, still, somewhat uneasy: we recognize the everyday visual elements of concrete life circumstances are more compelling than we expect. The act of looking slows us, quiets us, and allows us to notice, said the press release from BlackRock.

A Meet the Artist Reception will be held on Saturday, April 21 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm with the artist delivering brief remarks at 2:30 pm and present throughout the event to answer questions. Hoover will return to BlackRock to deliver an Artist Talk in the gallery on Saturday, May 19 at 2:00 pm. Both events are free and open to the public. Admission to the galleries at BlackRock is always free.
