Columbia Man Charged with January 3 Murder in Germantown

In late 2017 and early 2018, Germantown was rocked by two homicides in the course of two-weeks. Today, Montgomery County Police announced that arrests have been made in both murders.

MCPD announced that Detectives from the Major Crimes Division have arrested Quinnton Eric Brown, 30, of the 8900 block of Footed Ridge in Columbia, for the homicide of 30-year-old Maurice Cortez Mercer of Cross Ridge Way in Germantown back on January 3.

On January 3 at approximately 3:51 pm, 5th District officers responded to a home in the 12500 block of Cross Ridge Way for the report of a suspicious situation. First responders located Mercer deceased in the living room of his residence from two gunshot wounds. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Mercer’s death as a homicide by gunshot wound.

During the initial investigation, detectives collected forensic evidence, in the form of a brown McDonald’s bag. The bag had two large holes/torn areas in the bottom, according to court documents. Eventually, forensic detectives were able to locate a fingerprint belonging to Quinnton Brown.

According to charging documents, detectives learned that the victim had become “noticeably concerned and fearful of reprisal” after Brown and he had gotten into a dispute several days before the shooting.

Detectives noted in court documents, that Quinnton Brown’s criminal history includes prior convictions for Second Degree Assault, Third Degree Burglary, Violation of Probation, Kidnapping, and Use of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime of Violence, and had recently been released from prison in November 2017.

On April 10, detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Brown with first-degree murder. On April 12, Brown was arrested on the strength of the warrant. He is currently being held without bond.

According Maryland Case Search, Quinnton Eric Brown, who is also known as Earin D. Davis, was arrested in March of 2012 and charged with Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, as well as, Kidnapping and Use of a Firearm in a Commission of a Felony. Brown agreed to a plea agreement in which he plead guilty to the charges of Kidnapping and Use of a Firearm in a Commission of a Felony on Nov. 5, 2012. He was sentenced to five years in prison, and three years of supervised probation.

According to court documents, Brown was released from prison in early November 2017, and less than 65 days later, MCPD detectives believe he shot and killed Maurice Cortez Mercer. Brown is being held without bond in Montgomery County Correctional Facility. Brown is due back in court for a preliminary hearing in this case on May 11.

One month ago, on March 12, MCPD announced the arrest of two Silver Spring men, Kairee Deyonte Dorsey, 27, of the 13600 block of Sir Thomas Way, and Christopher Arthur Breeden Jr., 23, of the 11200 block of Lockwood Drive, for the homicide of 18-year-old Andrew Turner of Germantown back on December 16, 2017.
