Germantown has been ranked as the Third Most Culturally Diverse City in America in WalletHub.com’s 2018 ranking of most diverse population areas in the country, which was released on Tuesday. Germantown came in behind Jersey City, NJ, which took the top spot for a third year in a row, and neighboring Gaithersburg. In last year’s ranking, Germantown was second most diverse so as a town, it seems Germantown and Gaithersburg are trading spots on the list.

Rounding out the top five most diverse cities in America were, Jersey City, NJ, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Silver Spring, and Spring Valley, NV.

Germantown was the ranked the No. 2 Most Diverse Small City in American with a Cultural Diversity Score of 93.91. Gaithersburg ranked just above Germantown to earn the title Most Diverse Small City with a score of 94.01. Indeed, four Montgomery County cities were at the top of the Small City list, with Gaithersburg in the spot (93.01), Germantown in second (93.91) Silver Spring in third (92.58) and Rockville in fourth with (87.95). Ellicott City, MD was25 and Frederick, MD, was 26 on the Small City list.

According to WalletHub.com’s research, Germantown ranked third in Ethonracial Diversity, Ninth in Linguistic Diversity, and 74th in Birthplace Diversity.

“Diverse cities broaden and enrich our lives by giving us different experiences and perspectives,” said Belle Rose Ragins, a Professor of Organizations & Strategic Management in the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “Although we are often more comfortable interacting with those who are similar to us, this experience is not growth-producing. We learn and grow most when we stretch our boundaries and interact with those who are different from us.”

“Diverse cities not only offer us the opportunity for learning and growth, they can help us overcome implicit and explicit sterotypes and prejudice,” said Ragins.

To identify the most ethnically diverse places in America, WalletHub compared more than 500 of the largest U.S. cities across three key metrics, including ethno-racial diversity, linguistic diversity and birthplace diversity.
