BlackRock Center Presents ‘Handcrafted: Fiber Art and Turned Wood’ Exhibit

The BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown is presenting a juried exhibition featuring fiber art and turned wood pieces in the center’s Kay Gallery through February 23.

The regional juried exhibition “HANDCRAFTED: Fiber Art & Turned Wood” presents the work of 53 contemporary artists and fine craft artisans working in fiber art and turned wood. The exhibit was open to submissions from artists residing in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, DC, and West Virginia.

The 23 selected works of fiber art feature traditional and experimental materials which employ textile techniques which include quilting, weaving, embroidery, knitting, sewing, beading, and mixed media along with current innovations in this evolving medium.

The 38 selected works of turned wood include both functional and sculptural pieces created using the lathe, hand-held tools, and a steady hand to carve original turnings which demonstrate a wide range of forms which can be achieved on a rotating axis.

Fiber Art entries were juried by Camille Anne Brewer, Curator of Contemporary Art at the George Washington University Textile Museum in Washington, DC, who selected works by artists Lynda Andrews-Barry, Sasha Baskin, Marina Baudoin, Atsuko Chirikjian, Linda Colsh, Catherine Day, Erika Diamond, Joan Dreyer, Zoya Gutina, Judy Kirpich, Alice Magorian, Dominie Nash, Yena Peace Park, Amy Wike, Katherine Wilson, and Dianne Miller Wolman.
