MCPS to Close Two-and-a-Half Hours Early Due to Expected Icy Conditions

Montgomery County Public Schools announced that schools will close early today (Jan. 8) due to emergency weather conditions. Schools will dismiss students two and one-half hours earlier than the regular closing time. Students in morning pre-kindergarten programs and morning half-day Head Start will be dismissed at 10:50 am. Afternoon pre-kindergarten and other early childhood programs are canceled. All school and community activities in school buildings also are canceled. Day care programs in school buildings will remain open as scheduled.

The move comes due to wintery mix expected to coat the area with what the National Weather Service called a “glaze of ice.” The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Germantown area beginning at 1:00 pm Monday, Jan. 8 until 7:00 pm Monday night. A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. “Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving,” said the National Weather Service.

“A wintry mix expected, with either freezing rain or rain that will freeze on contact with very cold ground surfaces,” said the National Weather Service. “The ice will result in very slippery conditions on sidewalks, roads and bridges, including during the evening commute on Monday. Total ice accumulations of a light glaze are expected.”

The National Weather Service issued statement saying that there is a potential winter commuting hazard for the Baltimore/Washington Metro area for Monday. “If commuting Monday afternoon or evening, be aware of the POSSIBILITY of significant travel disruptions. Plan ahead by allowing for extra travel time, and consider using public transportation and telework options.”
