January 5, 2018

Montgomery County Police have released a disturbing surveillance video of armed robbers holding two convenience store clerks at gunpoint and demanding money.

The robbery took place on at 1:35 am on Friday, December 29 at the 7-Eleven 18701 Liberty Mill Road in Germantown and detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Major Crimes Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects.

The investigation by detectives revealed that the two suspects, both with their faces concealed and armed with handguns, entered the store and confronted two adult employees.

The video shows two suspects enter the store a few seconds apart. The first suspect enters the store. He has one hand in the pocket of his coat, and he shakes the exposed, but gloved hand, as if shaking off the cold outside. He is about six-foot tall based on the measuring system on the door. The first suspect immediately heads toward the back of the store.

About five seconds later, the second suspect enters the store. He is shorter and leaner. He too is masked. He is about 5-foot, 6-inches tall. (Both suspects are wearing hoods so they may be a few inches shorter without the hoods on.) The second suspect enters the store and looks around as if confirming his partner is there are ready, in can be seen pulling a handgun from his pocket as he begins the robbery.

The video cuts to a different surveillance camera showing the second subject at the counter holding the clerk at gunpoint. A few seconds later, a second employee comes from the back of the store holding what appears to be coffee earn; the first suspect is holding him and his a gun to his head. They reach the counter, and the employee puts the coffee urn down. The suspect continues to hold the gun to the back of the clerk’s head as they demand cash from the registers. As they wait, the second suspect can be seen pushing the gun into the head of the clerk and leaning on the gun, as the first suspect collects the cash.

At one point the first suspect looks at the camera, which is next to the 7-Eleven’s doorway. According to MCPD spokesperson Officer Rick Goodale, the suspect is reacting to another customer about to enter the store. The alert customer noticed what was happening and quickly left the area.

After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and knowing that a customer was approaching the store, the armed robbers fled from the store.

Police do not have any suspects, and no arrests have been made in this case.    This robbery was the second armed robbery of a retail location at the corner of Liberty Mill Road and Clopper Road in two days. On Wednesday, December 27, two individuals entered the Tasty 5 Pizza shop at 13525 Clopper Road, owned by Northwest High School alumni Afnan Shafiq. One of the men displayed a handgun and demanded money.  The incident made regional headlines when the owner of the pizza joint gave chase to two armed robbers ending with arrests in Virginia after a 25-mile chase.

According to news reports, once the would-be robbers fled the scene the owner gave chase in his vehicle. The chase headed west on Clopper Road and then up Clarksburg Road past the Clarksburg Premium Outlets to southbound Interstate 270. The suspects continued fleeing down I-270, eventually getting on the outer-loop of I-495 toward Virginia. The car crossed the American Legion Bridge and got on southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway. The car was ultimately stopped, with the help of US Park Police, and two suspects were taken into custody. US Park Police initiated a pit maneuver on the car, which brought the pursuit to an end.
