Jags Ground Falcons, 70-41 to Remain Unbeaten

New Year, same unbeaten Jags. The Northwest boys basketball team continued the winning streak on Tuesday with a decisive 70-41 victory over the Poolesville Falcons.

The now 7-0 Jags put 1-7 Poolesville away early scoring 41 in the first half, thanks in large part to James Assiongbon’s eight-point first quarter. He would finish with nine for game on four field goals and a free throw. The Jags had 11 players with points in the game and were led by Norval Black’s 13 points on three field goals, a tree-pointer, and he shot four-for-five from the line. Northwest’s Shahab Mastori added nine points on two field goals, one three-ball, and two free throws.

The Falcons’ Ryan Haddaway led all scorers with 16 points, including five field goals, and two from beyond the arc.

The Jags came out strong scoring 20 in the first quarter while holding Poolesville to eight points. In the second quarter, Northwest continued to pour on the points scoring 21, while stepping up the defense and allowing the Falcons to score just four points in the second quarter. The Jags led 41-12 at halftime.

The Jags were set the host Damascus tonight (Thursday, Jan. 4), in a game that was rescheduled from December 5, but that game has been rescheduled due to the snow and the MCPS school closure.

On Friday, the Jags will welcome their arch rival the Quince Orchard Cougars, who boast a record of 5-3 this season. QO is coming into the Jagdome after a 10 point, 54-44 victory over Wootton on Monday. The Cougars have three losses, one to 1-6 Rockville on December 15 and two at the hands of Frederick County teams. A one point 50-49 loss to Tuscarora on December 8, and a 57-52 loss to Frederick High School on December 27.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Jags fell in a road loss to the Lady Falcons 58-15 on Tuesday night as Poolesville extended their unbeaten record to 9-0. The Lady Jags fell even at 3-3. The Lady Jags will travel to play 3-4 Quince Orchard on Friday night. The Lady Falcons will hope remain unbeaten as they host Damascus on Friday.
