Firefighters Work for Three Hours to Safely Remove Patient From Germantown Home

Shortly after midnight on Christmas Night, Montgomery County first responders were called at a Germantown residence on Walnut View Court for a medical transport involving a patient weighing more than 500 pounds. Crews had to call MCFRS Technical Rescue Teams, which worked for three hours to stabilize the stairs of the home.

EMTs from Paramedic Engine 722 and Ambulance 722 were called to 12900 block of Walnut View Court at about 12:30 am on December 26 for a medical emergency for a bariatric patient. The EMS crews called for assistance from a building inspector/engineer, as well as the technical rescue teams due to concerns that the interior and exterior stairs of the dwelling might not support the combined weight of the patient, the EMS team, and the equipment. In the end, seven different MCFRS crews were on scene to assist in stabilizing the stairs and help to remove the patient from the townhouse and transport the patient to a local hospital. The two technical trucks, TR700 and

TR700B of the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department in Darnestown used lumber and adjustable support poles to ensure the stairways both inside and outside of the residence would support the operation. The patient was finally extricated from the townhouse at about 3:30 am and transported to a local hospital.
