Two Businesses on Same Corner in Germantown Victimized by Armed Robbers Within 48 Hours

December 29, 2017

It seems the corner of Clopper Road and Liberty Mill Road has become a target, of sorts, for folks looking to rob businesses. Two businesses in the cluster of commercial property on that corner in Germantown have been victimized by armed robbers within 48 hours.

The first, on Wednesday evening, the incident made regional headlines when the owner of the pizza joint gave chase to two armed robbers ending with arrests in Virginia after a 25-mile chase.

And last night, police have confirmed that the 7-Eleven at 18701 Liberty Mill Road in Germantown was the scene of an armed robbery. According to police, a man entered the store at about 1:35 am on Friday, Dec. 29 and displayed a handgun and demanded cash. Police do not have any suspects, and no arrests have been made in this case.

On Wednesday evening, an attempted armed robbery of a pizza shop located behind the 7-Eleven resulted in a police chase down I-270, over the American Legion Bridge into Virginia and down the George Washington Memorial Parkway, ultimately ending in a crash and the arrests of two individual by Fairfax County Police.

According to police the Tasty 5 Pizza shop at 13525 Clopper Road in Germantown is where the crime began. At about 5:30 pm on Wednesday, Dec. 27 two individuals entered the restaurant, owned by Northwest High School alumni Afnan Shafiq. One of the men displayed a handgun and demanded money.

According to news reports, once the would-be robbers fled the scene the owner gave chase in his vehicle. The chase headed west on Clopper Road and then up Clarksburg Road past the Clarksburg Premium Outlets to southbound Interstate 270. According to Officer Rick Goodale, an MCPD spokesman, “Officers were given a lookout for the suspect vehicle and picked up the car on southbound 270 near the exit at Montgomery Village Avenue/Quince Orchard Road.” Goodale said MCPD officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the suspects continued fleeing down I-270, eventually getting on the outer-loop of I-495 toward Virginia. The car crossed the American Legion Bridge and got on southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway.

“The car was ultimately stopped, with the help of US Park Police, and two suspects were taken into custody,” said Goodale. US Park Police initiated a pit maneuver on the car, which brought the pursuit to an end.

MCPD has obtained arrest warrants for the two suspects on charges of Attempted Armed Robbery and First-Degree Assault. Both suspects are still being held in Fairfax County as they await extradition to Maryland, according to Goodale.
