Damascus vs. Walkersville Playoff Game Could Be One for the Ages

While the Northwest v. Quince Orchard battle is sure to be the talk of the Germantown area. The game of the week could be happening up in Damascus as two reigning state champions will be facing off in the 2A West Regional Final, as 11-0 Damascus hosts 11-0 Walkersville from Frederick County.

Damascus is the back-to-back 3A State Champions and Walkersville is the reigning 2A State Champs. During the offseason, Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Associations reworked the divisions and moved Damascus, (and Seneca Valley and Poolesville) from the 3A to the 2A, which set up this meeting of champs.

Damascus blanked Carroll County’s Liberty, who came into the game 8-1, by a score of 35-0 at home last week to advance to regional final. While, Walkersville beat 9-1 Oakdale, 31-16 last week to set their date with Damascus.

Walkersville is 25-0 for the last two years. The Lions have been to the 2A State Final game for the last two years, falling to Patuxent by one point 21-20 in 2015 and defeating Elkton 33-6 last year. Walkersville has not lost since Dec. 5, 2015 in the 2A Finals to Patuxent.

Damascus continues to ride their 39 game unbeaten streak. The Swarmin’ Hornets have lost just three games since August 2013, and have been in the Maryland State Finals game since 2014. The Hornets’ last lost was Dec. 4, 2014 in the 3A Finals to Franklin 35-21.

Friday’s game at Damascus is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
