Adventures at the Playground: What Makes Germantown Great?

Germantown Pulse recently sent contributing

photographer Kim Grimes to the Adventure Playground in South Germantown Park to ask folks about living and playing in Germantown.

Clystie Ford and her daughter Amaya. "We love the schools and the bike trails near our house," Ford says. "My daughter loves riding her bike for hours." On things she would change about Germantown: "There's always something to do except for grown-ups at night. I would like more of a nightlife for mature crowds."

Nicole Prather. "I live off Germantown Road and Father Hurley, so it's convenient. The shops are right there, and it's easy to get on 270." On things she would change about Germantown: "I think we need to have more to do for pre-teens and teens--a YMCA, teen dances or a step team."

Left to right: Lu Yao; her son, Raymond Niu; Evelyn Zhou; and her mother, Emily Zhou. "We're both from big cities in China," says Yao. "There's more nature here. It's pretty convenient. The grocery stores are close to each other. The playground is pretty close to our house." On things they would change about Germantown: "I would like more areas for kids to play indoors during the winter," says Yao. "I would like more restaurants besides chain restaurants," says Zhou.

Joel Lopez and daughter, Aaliyah. Speaking of his neighborhood, Lopez says: "The residents are friendly. They greet you anytime they see you, throughout the day." On things he would change about Germantown: "Nothing really. I like the area. Everything seems to be balanced."

Jason West and daughter, Jachelle. "It's just peaceful out here," says West. "I like how diverse Germantown is. Also, it's close to work. I work in Rockville, and my wife works in Gaithersburg." On things he would change about Germantown: "The only thing I would change is 270."

Caroline Orban and her children (l to r), Sophie, Julian and Sebastian Castro. "I feel like we live close to everything," Orban says. "She swims, and the swim center is close. And he [Sebastian] plays soccer, and the SoccerPlex is right there." On things she would change about Germantown: "I wish it were safer, to be honest. I feel like the crime has increased since we moved here."

Jeremy Garcia and his father, Werner. "With a city, there's much noise," Garcia says. "Germantown is very quiet. I like the people who live here, too." On things he would change about Germantown: "Some of the schools are too old."
