BlackRock to Open 15th Anniversary Season with Performance by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

BlackRock Center for the Arts will kick off its 15th Anniversary 2017-2018 Season with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble on Friday, October 6, at 8:00 pm. Sons of the great jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran, the Hypnotic Brass Band is revolutionizing the sounds of hip-hop, jazz, funk, and rock with their soul-shaking horns and heart-thumping drum beats.

Growing up in a musical household in Chicago, the seven brothers were surrounded by music and the inspiration to plan. The Ensemble has collaborated and performed with many legendary artists such as Mos Def, Gorillaz, Wu Tang Clan, Prince, and others.

Opening weekend of the 15th Season continues on Sunday, Oct. 8 when BlackRock will the Grammy Award-winning, African-American, all-woman acapella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock at 7:00 pm. The troupe’s powerful and moving sound holds roots of gospel music, spoken word, blues and jazz.

Starting out in the D.C. vocal workshop Black Repertory Theater in 1973, the women have since made it their mission to present African-American history and culture through the powerful expression of sign language, song, and dance. This performance will feature sign-language interpretation (stage right).

Tickets to see Hypnotic Brass Band are between $21-39. Tickets to Sweet Honey in the Rock are between $29-55. For more information please visit blackrockcenter.org or call Patron Services at 301-528-2260.
