Million Dollar PowerBall Ticket Sold in Darnestown

A Darnestown retailer sold a $1 million Powerball Ticket as part of this week’s historic $758.7 million jackpot, according to Maryland Lottery Officials. While the big jackpot was won by a Massachusetts woman, some lucky local lottery player is $1 million richer.

Bethesda Beat is reporting that the winner is a 59-year-old Gaithersburg woman, who decided to remain anonymous works in the education field. She bought $10 worth of Quick Pick tickets.

The $1 million-winning ticket was sold at Potomac Shell, located at 12140 Darnestown Road across the street from Quince Orchard High School. The winner and her husband claimed her prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore this morning, according to Maryland Lottery spokeswoman Carole Gentry. The winner must claim within 182 days of the drawing date. Potomac Shell will receive a $2,500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the $1 million ticket, officials said.

The Maryland’s $1 million winner was one of 34 new millionaires across the country.

Overall, there were 201,079 winning tickets sold in Maryland for Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing, with prizes ranging from $4 to the $1 million winner sold in Montgomery County.

The jackpot of $758.7 million is the largest grand prize won by a single ticket in U.S. lottery history. The winner can choose to accept the prize as an annuity paid over 29 years, or take a lump sum of $480.5 million (before taxes). It was the second-largest jackpot in history, topped only by the $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot in January of 2016, which was shared by three winners in Florida, Tennessee and California.
