Power Restored to Germantown After Equipment Failure

August 2, 2017

Power is back on for over 700 customers in the Town Center area of Germantown after being powerless for about two hours on Wednesday afternoon. The power outage forced the BlackRock Center to close for a while.

The outage began at about 2:30 pm, according to Potomac Edison spokesman Todd Myers and power was restored a little after 4:00 pm.

According to Myers, the culprit in the outage was an above ground electrical junction box at Locbury Drive and Club Hill Drive failed creating the power failure for the surrounding area.

“The electric line goes into that box, and that piece junction box failed. Something in the box melted,” said Myers. While he said he is not certain that the heat was the cause of this particular failure, he added that issues such as this are more prevalent in the summer. “Anytime we have a number of hot days in the summer and more of a load going through it, more electricity going through the junction box, and if something is going of fail it is probably going fail when it is being more heavily used.”

Power has been restored to all customers in the area by rerouting power from other areas. However, crews remained on the site on Locbury Drive working on the initial cause of the outage, he said.
