Two Instances of Groups Assaulting, Robbing Individuals After Watching Fireworks



Montgomery County Police Department reported a number of criminal incidents in Germantown from June 19 through July 11.

Police report two separate instances of individuals being followed and later assaulted and robbed by groups of young men in Germantown over the July 4th Holiday Weekend.

The first incident took place on night of Sunday, July 1 between 11:00 pm. Police say two teenage victims were on their way home from watching the fireworks at Gaithersburg High School on a Montgomery County RideOn Bus 55. The victims told police that a group of seven black males boarded the bus at the Lakeforest Mall Transit Center in Gaithersburg.

When the teenage male victims exited the bus at Oxbridge Drive and Frederick Road in Germantown the suspects also exited the bus. As the victims walked near Drumcastle Terrace the suspects began to assault them and steal their cash and property. During the assault one of the suspects displayed a handgun.

Later that holiday weekend, on July 4 at about 10:30 pm a father and son were assaulted by a group of four to six teenagers near their home in the 18600 block of Poplar Glen Court in Germantown. According to police, the teenage male victim was watching the fireworks at the Maryland SoccerPlex the evening. He walked home with some friends, eventually the friends peeled off to walk to their houses, and the victim continued to his own house where his father was waiting for him.

The victim and his father met outside the house and were assaulted by a group of four- to six black males between the ages of 15 and 17. One of the suspects punched the father, while another punched the teenage victim and stole his sneakers.

Montgomery County Police report that a shoplifting incident at a grocery store turned into an armed robbery last month. Police say that at about 9:40 pm on a Tuesday night June 20 when a black man between the ages of 40 and 45 was seen shoving a package of meat under his shirt and walking out of the Giant Grocery Store at 18331 Leaman Farm Road. When store security confronted the man in the parking lot, he displayed a knife and told the security guard that he would cut him.
