UMAC Attack Baseball Team Wins Maryland State Tournament
On Monday, a group of boys from the Germantown area won the Cal Ripken League Major/60 State Championship Tournament held in Emmitsburg, Md., last weekend.
The 12U team of boys known as UMAC Attack Red rallied from behind to overcome a 5-3 deficit to defeat a team from Charles County by a score of 8-6 on Monday evening, July 10. The boys will advance to represent Maryland in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament in Poughkeepsie, NY over the weekend of July 19 through July 23.
The team, which is coached by Dylan Alguard, with assistant coaches Jim Weber, Mike Quinn, Scott Jauch, won the first three games of last weekend’s tournament by a combined total of 49-17 to clinch the No. 1 seed and advance directly to the championship game.
“We won our first three games which earned us the automatic birth to the championship game,” said Assistant Coach Jim Weber. “Which was really nice because it allowed us to rest our better pitchers. While we did lose to Smithburg in the fourth game in extra innings, we knew we were playing the championship.”
The team is comprised of mostly sixth graders and a couple of seventh graders. Through five games in the tournament, the UMAC Attack were led by Orion Foo who had 10 hits, including one home run in 16 at bats, to have a .625 batting average for the tournament. He scored eight times.
However, the UMAC attack slugger was Charlie Helfert, who knocked three dingers, a double, and nine singles to finish the tournament with a team-leading .905 slugging percentage.
Jordan Culliton also blasted two homer runs, two doubles, and six hits. He scored 10 times. Jason Weber added two doubles, while MJ Gentili and Ethan Quinn each had a two-bagger in the tournament.
It was UMAC Attack Red’s Orion Foo who saw the most action on the mound. He pitched eight-and-a-third innings during the tournament. He faced 39 batters and struck out nine, and didn’t walk any. Charlie Helfert was the second ace for UMAC facing 24 batters and striking out 10. Other pitchers included Aiden Butler, Ryan Lacourciere, Andrew Jauch, and Jason Weber.
According to assistant coach Jim Weber, many of the players on this team were on the team last year when they were defeated in the championship game by a team from Severn on a play at the plate in extra innings.
The Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament will feature 10 teams from New York, New Jersey Pennsylvania, and Maryland. The UMAC Attack Red will play their first game at noon on Wednesday, July 19 against a team from southern New Jersey.
